World Mental Health Day 2023: Know How Patients With Chronic Illness Can Take Care Of Their Mental Health

Mental health is critical to the overall health and quality of life of individuals with chronic diseases. In this article, we will have a look at how patients with chronic illness can deal with it.

In the world of healthcare, the importance of addressing mental health alongside physical health cannot be overstated. The emotional toll can be especially difficult for those suffering from chronic conditions. A quiet revolution in healthcare is taking place, one that recognises the interdependence of mental and physical well-being. Historically, the primary focus of healthcare has been on treating the physical symptoms of chronic illnesses. However, a growing knowledge of the mind-body relationship has prompted a shift in viewpoint. We now recognise that mental health is critical to the overall health and quality of life of individuals with chronic diseases.

In this article, we will have a look at how patients with chronic illness can deal with their mental health

Mental Health Of Patients Suffering From Chronic Illness:

Pritika Singh, who is the CEO of Prayag Hospitals Group said, "When individuals are told they have a chronic illness, the weight of that word 'chronic' can often make them feel defeated, as if life's journey has reached a dead end. It's a moment filled with anxiety and fear, as they grapple with the reality of their diagnosis. The path that follows often includes a variety of treatments, and in some cases, even unsuccessful surgeries, adding to the emotional burden."

"What's imperative to understand is the profound connection between mental well-being and effective treatment. Medications and therapies yield their best results but we should also address the patient's mental state. Many patients harbour doubts about the potential success of treatment due to mental barriers, which can significantly impede their progress," she added.

This is why it is important to emphasise that mental health care and medical treatment must work in tandem. By simultaneously addressing both aspects, we can expedite the road to recovery. Patients must not only receive medical treatment but also believe in its potential to heal. When we bridge the gap between their mental well-being and medical care, we create a pathway to faster, more successful recoveries.

How To Deal With Mental Health In Such Scenario:

Dr. Gorav Gupta, who is the Co-Founder of Emoneeds said, "Supporting patients with chronic illnesses as they navigate the complex terrain of their mental health is an essential aspect of holistic healthcare. Being diagnosed with life-changing chronic illnesses like diabetes, cancer, or Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) can often trigger a cascade of emotional challenges, including anxiety, depression, isolation, and hopelessness. To truly assist such individuals, we must foster a compassionate environment where they feel heard and understood. Primarily, it’s crucial to encourage open communication. Encourage patients to express their emotions and fears without judgment. Empathy goes a long way in validating their experiences and building trust."

In addition to that, here are a few tips shared by Sandeepa Kaur who is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist

  • Education: Understand your condition thoroughly to make informed decisions about your health. A lack of knowledge can cause significant anxiety.
  • Self-Care: Prioritize self-care practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation techniques. These strategies can alleviate stress and improve emotional well-being.
  • Set Realistic Goals: Establish achievable goals for managing your illness. Celebrate small victories and focus on what you can do, rather than what you can't.
  • Build a Support Network: Share your journey with friends, family, or support groups. Connecting with others who understand can provide emotional validation and practical advice.
  • Balanced Lifestyle: Strive for a balanced lifestyle with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep.
  • Seek Professional Support: Therapy can help individuals navigate emotional challenges, cope with stress, and develop resilience.

Integrating Mental Health Into The Care Program Of Children:

Anil Nair who is the CEO of St Jude India childcare centre shared the following:

  • One must recognize the emotional and psychological parts of their battle in addition to treating the physical symptoms.
  •  It is critical to provide a supportive and caring atmosphere for both patients and their families. When a child is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family is affected, and peer support can be extremely beneficial.
  • Recognizing that emotional issues can be overwhelming, so having a safe environment to express their thoughts can make all the difference in the world.
  • Families must get to take an active role in their care. "Knowledge is power," Educational programs to help families understand the medical aspects of their child's condition are vital. Understanding what's happening can reduce anxiety.
  • Chronic illness can disrupt a child's life in several ways. Encourage them to engage in activities they enjoy, which includes providing opportunities for play, education, and creative expression.
