According to the Hindu calendar, Hariyali Teej fast is observed every year on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month. Women keep the Hariyali Teej fast without water and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with rituals.
It is believed that by observing this fast, Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati are pleased and bless the woman with a child and give a long life to her husband. Hariyali Teej fast is also known as Shravani Teej because Hariyali Teej falls in the month of Sawan.
During Hariyali Teej fast, women wear green coloured sarees, and bangles which are sent from their maternal home.
On this day women observe Nirjala (without water) fast. In the evening, after worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, women listen to the story behind Hariyali Teej. Due to the greenery in the month of Sawan, green colour is given prominence in Hariyali Teej. There is a change in the universe during the month of Sawan.
Apart from this, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are considered very close to nature. And they love the colours of the earth. That is why the green colour is given so much prominence during Hariyali Teej fast.
