Emotional Well-Being: Tips For Overcoming The Challenges Of A Breakup

The grieving process has its ups and downs, and you may feel sad one moment and angry the next. Some people may even feel relieved. Here what you should keep in mind if you're overcoming a heartbreak.

Breaking up is never simple, especially if you are the one who initiates the breakup. To begin with, there are a variety of emotions to deal with, some of which may linger longer than others. There are also short-term and long-term steps you can take to recover from a breakup and go on to healthy, trusting relationships in the future, including one with yourself.

In an interaction with ABP Live, Dr Sameer Malhotra, Director and Head, Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences, Max Multi Speciality Centre, Panchsheel Park said: "Going through a breakup can be a challenging time for anyone, regardless of the circumstances. As emotional beings, it's natural to experience a wide range of feelings following a separation, including shock, denial, anger, depression, anxiety, despair, feelings of helplessness, and even periods of blaming yourself or others. It's important to remember that these emotions are normal and a natural part of the healing process."

She further explained more about what to expect during a breakup and how to recover positively:

Respect Your Own Boundaries: However, it's also important to respect your own boundaries and those of others during this time. Avoid becoming overly involved in personal relationships that may make it difficult to move on and find closure. Instead, try to channel your energy into constructive hobbies that bring you joy and fulfillment. Once relatively calmer try to work towards healthy introspection and self-improvisation.

Don't Rush To Another Relationship: Additionally, it's important to avoid rushing into another relationship too soon. Taking time to heal and reflect on what you want in a partner is important. Hurried decisions can lead to more heartache down the road. Instead, focus on taking care of yourself and following a healthy lifestyle. This can include things like eating well, getting enough sleep, and engaging in physical activity.

Avoid Unhealthy Coping Mechanisms: It's also important to avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as substance or alcohol misuse, which can make your emotions even more difficult to manage. Instead, consider trying yoga or meditation to help you find inner peace and calm.

Focus On Positive Things: Finally, it's important to counteract negative thoughts with positive ones. This can be done by focusing on the good things in your life and surrounding yourself with supportive people who encourage you. Avoid constant self-criticism or judgment of others, as these thoughts only serve to prolong your healing process.

Don't Hesitate To Seek Professional Help: If you're struggling to manage your emotions following a breakup, it may be helpful to seek professional advice from a mental health professional. They can provide you with the support and guidance you need to navigate this challenging time and move forward with confidence and hope. Remember, it's okay to take care of yourself, and seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
