UCC Is BJP's Electoral Plan To Enforce Majoritarian Agenda: Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan

Vijayan in a statement said that the decision on UGC was aimed towards the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan alleged that the Uniform Civil Code (UCG) was a plot by BJP to implement the majoritarian agenda of 'one nation, one culture' and he demanded to withdraw the decision. He said that the UCC proposal was an aim to eliminate the nation's cultural diversity.

According to ANI, Vijayan in a statement said that the decision on UGC was aimed towards the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Vijayan said, “Those who suspect that any discussion on it at present is aimed at undermining the nation’s plurality by imposing the dominance of the majority, cannot be faulted. This can only be seen as a plot to enforce their majoritarian agenda of ‘one nation, one culture’ by eliminating our nation’s cultural diversity.”

He said that the focus should be on modernising and amending discriminatory practices in personal laws in the country instead of imposing UGC.

Vijayan said that it was imperative that the decision was taken on the basis of discussions with all the concerned parties and that the issue cannot be resolved through the hasty executive decision.

The CM also recalled the opinion of the previous law commission that the Uniform Civil Code would neither be necessary nor desirable at this stage in 2018. So, he questioned the reason for deviating from the stance.

“India is distinguished by its diversity, which embraces differences and disagreements, rather than a uniformity that suppresses them. What is to be done, is to revise the various personal laws in tune with the times, rather than imposing uniformity with an ulterior motive,” Vijayan said, as per the report. The CM added that the Union government and the Law Commission should withdraw from their decision to impose Uniform Civil Code in the country.
