Kerala's Idukki District Faces Heavy Rainfall, Water Released From Two Dams

In Idukki, district authorities instructed individuals residing along the Periyar, Kallar, and Chinnar rivers exercise caution and adhere to the safety guidelines issued by the authorities.

Intense rainfall has impacted the high-range Idukki district in Kerala, prompting state authorities to issue orders for the release of water from a few dams. The officials have instructed the release of water from dams that have neared the red level. Idukki district administration said that permission was granted to release 500 cumex of water from Pampla dam and raise two shutters of Kallar dam by 10 centimeters.

The authorities stated that the approval was provided due to the substantial rainfall in the catchment of the two dams and an increase in their water storage levels. They recommended that individuals residing along the Periyar, Kallar, and Chinnar rivers exercise caution and adhere to the safety guidelines issued by the authorities, as reported by PTI.

On Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert in Idukki and three other districts in the state. A 'yellow alert' means a forecast of substantial rainfall ranging between 6 to 11 cm.

Following the heavy rains, there were also reports of landslides in some parts of the state.

Local authorities confirmed that though over an acre of agricultural land was swept away in the landslides, no casualties were reported, and no residential properties were harmed.
