Kerala: Many Hurt After Temporary Bridge Set Up For Christmas Collapses In Neyyattinkara

The moment worshippers climbed the temporary structure, it collapsed, allegedly incapable of supporting the weight.

Several individuals on Monday sustained injuries after a makeshift bridge put up for Christmas celebrations collapsed in Neyyattinkara town in Thiruvananthapuram of Kerala. The moment worshippers climbed the temporary structure, it collapsed, allegedly incapable of supporting the weight.

According to ANI, a makeshift pathway that was set up for a Christmas celebration collapsed in Thiruvananthapuram's Poovar area. Around seven people sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital.

Over 8 people sustained injuries and they were shifted to the hospital immediately. One of the women suffered a major fracture in her leg while the rest of them suffered minor injuries, the officials said, as per a report on Mathrubhumi. 

The officer said, the incident took place around 9 PM when several persons climbed the bridge and when it was unable to support the weight it slanted to a side and toppled. 

The temporary bridge was set up to cross over a wall to the other side to see a waterfall and a scene depicting the birth of Jesus. The other decorations as part of the Christmas celebration will also be seen from there. 

He said, the bridge was meant to support only a few people at a time but several people climbed on it. This resulted in the accident. 

Meanwhile, the Christian community in Kerala joyfully observed Christmas on Monday, marking the festive occasion with the midnight mass conducted in churches throughout the state.

Cardinal Mar Baselios Cleemis presided over the midnight mass at St. Mary's Cathedral of the Syro Malankara Catholic Church in the state capital. Simultaneously, Archbishop Thomas Jessayyan Netto of the Latin Catholic Archdiocese in Thiruvananthapuram led the service at St. Joseph's Metropolitan Cathedral in Palayam.
