“Modern Indian Women Want To Stay Single, Unwilling To Give Birth”: Karnataka Minister's Statement Creates Stir

Chennai: Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar made a controversial statement about "modern women" in India which is receiving widespread criticism from different sections of the public. Addressing the 25th convocation of National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru on Sunday, the Minister said that the modern Indian women want to stay single and even if they get married they do not want to give birth to children. 

According to a report on The New Indian Express, the Minister said, many modern Indian women want to stay single and they do not want to give birth even if they get married. They also want surrogacy and this paradigm shift is not good, he said.

Then commenting on the "western influence", the Minister went on to say that today's generation don't want their parents to be with them and also forget about their grandparents. 

Further, the Minister went on to speak about the mental health of India. The Minister said, every seventh Indian has mild, moderate or severe mental health issues. However, he said that stress management is an art that Indians need not have to learn but preach the world through the ways taught by ancestors.

Talking about the pandemic and impact on mental health, Sudhakar said, the government started counselling for COVID-19 patients and Karnataka alone has given counselling to 24 lakh COVID-19 patients in Karnataka. 

He also expressed his thankfulness to NIMHANS for providing counselling to the patients through their digital platform and providing tele-medicines.
