Karnataka: Hazardous Chemical Leak In Fish Processing Plant, 20 Employees Hospitalised

New Delhi: As many as 20 employees were hospitalized after a chemical leak in a fish processing plant at Baikampady, outskirts of the Mangaluru city, said a police official on Tuesday.

The incident took place at Everest Sea Foods Private Limited, a fish processing plant at Baikampady industrial area where at least 80 employees were present at the time of the incident, said police commissioner N Shashikumar.

After the leak, 20 employees developed breathing problems after which they were admitted to a private hospital in the city. Fire and emergency services teams were rushed to the spot.

According to a New Indian Express report, after the Fire and Emergency personnel have brought the situation to normal by plunging the leak, a case was registered at Panambur Police Station.

An Environmental Officer at Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Keerthi Kumar K, reportedly said that the preliminary investigation revealed that the ammonium leakage from the compressor flange was the cause of the chemical leak. He also said that the leak was plunged within an hour so there were no casualties.

A team from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Factories and Boilers, District Disaster Management Authority visited the spot abd assessed the situation. Fire and Emergency services were also pressed into action to plunge the chemical leak.
