A few months ago, it was reported that a streak of earthquakes was recorded in Karnataka, which was later learned to be a phenomenon called hydro-seismicity. The quakes were recorded in Kalaburdagi, Bidar and Vijayapura districts in the state.

Hydra seismicity describes the triggering of earthquakes swarms in Peninsular India as the water from heavy rainfall regions enter the fractures in rocks which creates perturbation within them. According to a study published in the Journal of Geological Society of India, with the increase of 10 metres of groundwater, pore pressure increases by 1 bar which in return releases in earthquake swarms.

This year at least 15 times, people in Karnataka could feel the tremors of earthquakes albeit being low in intensity, it is a unique experience for the people of the region to have been feeling the quake tremours on a frequent basis.
