Karnataka: Former CM Basavaraj Bommai Detained For Protesting Suspension Of 10 BJP MLAs

The 10 MLAs were suspended from the rest of the assembly session for throwing papers at Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani while he was on his chair.

New Delhi: Karnataka Police on Wednesday detained former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai along with other leaders for protesting outside the assembly over the suspension of 10 BJP MLAs, news agency ANI reported.

The 10 MLAs were suspended from the rest of the assembly session for throwing papers at Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani while he was on his chair. They were protesting against the Congress government for allegedly "misusing" the IAS officers for the Opposition leaders' meeting in the last two days.

The BJP members staged the protests after Deputy Speaker Rudrappa Lamani was conducting conduct the House proceedings after Speaker U T Khader left the assembly stating that the House would not break for lunch and the discussion on the Budget and demands would continue.

“Today was the murder of Democracy in the Assembly. This shows the dictatorship of the Congress government, they have suspended 10 of our MLAs for no reason. We have issued a no-confidence motion against the speaker. We will take this fight to the people,” ANI quoted Bommai as saying.

"Today our Speaker is misusing his power. He is favouring only one side. The Siddaramaiah government is misusing the IAS and IPS officers in the state," suspended BJP MLA Yashpal Anand Suvarna told ANI.

In the wake of the protest, the Congress MLAs objected to the "unruly" behaviour of the BJP legislators, resulting in a ruckus. The Deputy Speaker then adjourned the House for the later part of the day, PTI reported.
