DRI seizes gold worth Rs 77 lakh

Rajahmundry (Andhra Pradesh) [India] February 8 (ANI): The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a passenger with gold weighing 2.49 kg worth Rs 77 lakh at Rajahmundry Railway station.

The accused was travelling from Guwahati to Chennai in Dibrugarh-Tambaram Express.

After investigation, it was noticed that he was carrying few tool boxes which contained impact drivers which appeared heavier than normal.

After removing the screws, the officers could find yellow colored metal inside the screw driver.

Gold in molten form was poured into the hollow space of the drivers and screwed it, so as to completely conceal the gold.

The officers, with the help of certain equipment, could pull out five cylindrical shaped gold round bars.

After interrogation, the passenger admitted that the five cylindrical shaped gold bars concealed in the impact drivers are of foreign-origin which was smuggled inside the country from Myanmar and he was transporting the same to Chennai.

The smuggled gold has been seized under the Customs Act, 1962.
