Darjeeling Unrest: GJM Yuva Morcha to go on indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow
Darjeeling (West Bengal) [India], July 20 (ANI): The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) Yuva Morcha on Thursday announced that they will go on an indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow (June 21).
The shutdown in Darjeeling for a separate state on Thursday entered the 36th day.
Speaking to ANI, Yuva Morcha's president Prakash Gurung said, "The party's decision is to fast unto death as to push for their demands for Gorkhaland. So, GJM Yuva Morcha will go on an indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow".
The GJM had also called for an indefinite hunger strike from July 15.
Earlier in the week, amid the ongoing unrest in Darjeeling, a police vehicle was set on fire by unknown assailants. The incident happened during the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) protest rally.
Darjeeling is witnessing unrest since June 12 when the GJM announced an indefinite strike to protest against the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's decision to make Bengali compulsory for all schools in the state.
The protestors are asking for a separate Gorkhaland, a long pending demand of the people of the hills.
Meanwhile, GJM activists demanded restoration of internet services, which the district administration had suspended since June 18 to stop agitators from using the social media to spread "provocative posts".(ANI)
