Guwahati [Assam], January 7 (ANI): With an aim to promote skill development in northeast India, the centre and the states have been rolling out various projects.

Focusing on the need to nurture skilled manpower in the state, Sonowal recently inaugurated around 249 skill centres in the state to impart vocational training to the native youth and help them become financially independent.

The centres were inaugurated as a part of a programme organized by Department of Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

"Assam is a state of immense and vast potentialities. Knowledge and skill are the two elements for an empowered life and necessary to realize the potentials. If we don't have knowledge or the mental capacity to understand the potentialities, socio-economic progress cannot gather speed without them. Our youth must give a new dimension to the pace of state's development by acquiring knowledge and enhancing their skills," Sonowal said.

Around 18,000 youths from all across the state will be imparted training for various skills and by March 31 this year, around 1.5 lakh youths would be trained on trade under the state government's initiative.

Keeping in view the problems faced by educated, unemployed youths of the state and the region as a whole, the Assam government is also planning to set up foreign language learning centres in the state to open job avenues for the youth abroad.

Highlighting the inherent potentialities of Assam, a state brimming with youth power, Sonowal said that economic foundation of the state would be bolstered by skilled manpower.

He added that setting up of skill development training centres was an effort to carry forward the Prime Minister's vision of skilfull youth through Skill India programme.

Moreover, the Assam government has signed a MoU with the Government of Singapore under which a skill development centre of international standards will be set up in Mangaldoi.

According to official data, 10,000 youths of the state would undergo training in the centre.

Training will be given in various fields such as manufacturing, hospitality, beautician training programme and other private sectors.
