Interestingly, Bhendi Bazaar is the only area where a distinct Gharana of Indian Classical Music developed in the late 1890's. On Thursday (Aug 31), over a dozen people were crushed to death, while scores were feared trapped after a 5-floor building collapded here. Due to its crumbling infrastructure, the area is set to be revamped and the project is being undertaken by Saifee Burhani Upliftment Trust initiated by Dr Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, head of the Dawoodi Bohra community. According to sbut.com, Bhendi Bazaar was developed in the 'Chawl' or dormitory fashion. They were designed to house single men who had moved to the city for earning a livelihood. Slowly entire families moved into these Chawls. ‘Bhendi Bazaar’ in South Mumbai got its name from the Britishers residing to the south of Crawford Market in Fort. They referred to this area to the north of Crawford Market as "Behind the Bazaar".
