New Delhi: If we have to choose the most talked about topic for India in recent years, it has to be the country’s economy.
India holds an aspiration — the target of reaching its goal in becoming a $5-trillion economy by 2025.
The task is not easy. In the process of achieving this dream, India has hit severe roadblocks. A $5-trillion economy doesn't only define a statistical benchmark, it creates an environment for the people where everybody can join in to share the onus of economic growth, to make lives better.
In 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a plan. It was to make India a $5-trillion economy. He said his government would aim to increase the size of the economy to $5 trillion by March 2025.
However, little did he know then that the coronavirus pandemic would strike and turn the equations on the head not just for India but for the whole world. India, however, has done well on the front despite so many ups and downs.
According to World Bank report, India’s economy reached a size of $3.1 trillion at the end of 2021 from $2.7 trillion at the end of 2020. It was at $2.9 trillion at the end of 2019.
How far is the $5-trillion milestone feasible? Is it at all practical for India to reach the goal by 2025? Answers to these questions are being sought.
On the platform of ‘Wildstone presents ABP Ideas of India’ on Saturday, March 26, the country will see two noted economists, Montek Singh Ahluwalia, former deputy chairman, Planning Commission of India, and Dr Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog, debating over the paradigm of India’s economy.
Tune in to ABP Network on March 25 and 26 to watch the best minds talk about their vision for India and the steps that can be taken in different directions for a better future.
