Covid Second Wave: Kerala Overtakes Maharashtra In Active Cases, Total Tally Surges Past 30 Lakh Mark

Kerala recorded 13,563 fresh cases earlier on Friday, while Maharashtra reported 8,296 new coronavirus cases.

Thiruvananthapuram/Mumbai: Despite the vaccination in full swing during the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Kerala has surpassed Maharashtra in the number of active Covid-19 cases.

According to reports, Kerala recorded 14,087 fresh cases, pushing the infection caseload to 30,53,116, while 109 more deaths took the toll to 14,489.

A government release stated that as many as 11,867 people have been cured of the infection in Kerala, taking the total recoveries to 29,22,921 and the number of active cases in the state to 1,15,226.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 8,296 new cases, 6,026 recoveries, and 179 deaths in the last 24 hours. With this, state's total Covid tally reached 61,49,264 and the number of active cases was recorded at 1,14,000.

This comes as Kerala, which has reported a significant rise in new infections in the last few days, has been recording between 11,000 and 13,000 cases every day for almost a month now.

The increase in new infections in Kerala, which has been contributing the largest number of Covid cases since June 15, comes at a time when every other major state has witnessed a significant drop in the daily case count.

To add to Kerala’s woes, the daily Covid-19 cases count in the country has declined by nearly a half during the same time period.

Recording over 90,000 confirmed cases per million population, Kerala has not succeeded in bringing the infection numbers down despite the vaccination going on at a rapid pace in the southern state.
