ABP News Snap Poll: Here's How Common Man Is Reacting To Second Wave Of Coronavirus

ABP News conducted Snap Poll to understand the sudden rise of Coronavirus cases in the country and how they are responding to the Coronavirus vaccine.

India is witnessing a second wave of Coronavirus in March 2021, almost 1 year after India went under lockdown when the pandemic hit the country. The sudden surge in the cases has alarmed the state and the central government.

While the rate of vaccination has picked up through the month of March, when India’s drive was expanded to include those most vulnerable to Covid-19, the country’s inoculation campaign still faces an uphill battle as it races against the surge of new infections in the second wave.

To understand the recent surge and what people feel about Coronavirus now, ABP News conducted a snap poll and got some interesting insights.

According to the survey findings, presently, fewer numbers of people are scared of getting infected with the deadly virus, which explains the reasons for people becoming careless in following COVID appropriate behaviour leading to a spike in coronavirus positive cases in the country.

46,951 new cases were registered between Sunday to Monday, the country's highest daily spike of 2021. Maharashtra has reported the highest daily new cases at 31,855 on Wednesday. This is followed by Punjab where over 320 coronavirus samples have been found to be from the UK lineage and then Kerala which recorded more than 2500 cases.

According to the survey, in August 2020, while more than 43% of respondents said that they were scared of contracting the deadly virus, presently, only 19.8% said they are worried about getting infected by the disease and 49.5% clearly denied having any fear of the disease.

So, the survey hinted that people who are not scared of the disease or believe that there is no Coronavirus threat left in the country are not following the guidelines like following masks, using sanitisers as suggested by the government.

The respondents even shared they feel the Coronavirus threat is strongly exaggerated now as compared to April-May, 2020 when the breakout happened.

ABP News also asked people about the central government's performance during the pandemic.

The survey data revealed that most people are satisfied with the Narendra Modi government on the way they handled the Covid crisis. The majority of the respondents expressed that they are contented with the steps the Modi government took during the pandemic are contented with how the crisis was managed and handled. More than 55% of those, who were interviewed during the survey said that the Indian government has been successfully handled the COVID-19 in the country.

Taking note of the economic crisis the country faced during the lockdown in 2020 and the present situation on how people handled the uncertainties.

The survey revealed that the uncertainties for economic survival among people have diminished, compared to the time, when lockdown came into force.

According to the survey, at the time of the announcement of lockdown in March 2020,  more than 77% of those surveyed said that they have less than a week’s ration with them but within a month this figure saw a sharp decline and reached just 10-11 per cent.

Another aspect that came out from the survey has been that, presently, people are more prepared to face any adverse situation. During the survey, 28.3% of the respondents said that, presently, they have a month’s ration/ medicine, etc. or money for ration/medicine, etc. available with them. While at the time of announcement of lockdown on March 24, 2020, only 3% of the respondents had said they have month’s ration/ medicine etc. or money for ration/medicine, etc. available with them.

As the Covid 19 led to a colossal economic crisis worldwide and the pandemic presented an unprecedented challenge to the entire world, ABP News did a survey on the employment status in the country. The survey data revealed that, during the lockdown, when economic activities were severely restricted, almost every fourth person was completely laid off from the work. The situation started to improve with the beginning easing out of lockdown. However, it’s a dismal picture even now as almost 10% of the respondents during the survey said they are unemployed.

Out of those interviewed during the survey, more than 70% of the respondents said that the Covid-19 vaccine would be effective, an almost equal number of those surveyed expressed faith in a vaccine is safe for them. Notably, more than 80% of the respondents said that they will take the vaccine, whenever, it will be publicly available.
