PlayStation Showcase: Sony Announces 'Project Q' Handheld Gaming Console

PlayStation's Project Q price and availability details are yet to be revealed.

Sony made a significant announcement during the PlayStation Showcase event, confirming the imminent arrival of its newest handheld console, dubbed 'Project Q'. Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, provided the revelation, assuring eager fans that this dedicated handheld device would be released later this year. The primary function of Project Q will be to facilitate game streaming from the PS5 console through remote play using Wi-Fi connectivity. The device itself will feature an 8-inch HD screen and incorporate all the buttons and features of the popular DualSense wireless controller. Ryan expressed Sony's anticipation in sharing further details regarding Project Q in the near future.

Best described as a PlayStation controller with a central 8-inch screen, Project Q deviates from the conventional design approach of gaming handhelds. Interestingly, it bears resemblance to the recently announced Backbone One PlayStation Edition smartphone controller. Consequently, Project Q can be categorized as a PS5 accessory or peripheral rather than a standalone handheld device.

This new addition to Sony's product lineup represents the latest entry in the realm of cloud gaming systems. Sony's decision to pursue this venture signifies its confidence in the future of remote gaming.

With a 1080p resolution and 60fps playback, the screen of Project Q ensures an immersive gaming experience. The content is streamed directly from the user's PlayStation 5 console. Moreover, the accompanying controller possesses all the advanced features of the DualSense, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Ryan remarked, "It also highlights the tremendous popularity and power of the PS5 as the global development community rallies to push its advanced capabilities to the limit." Sony's commitment to innovation is evident in their substantial investments in cutting-edge hardware, such as the highly anticipated PlayStation VR2 and the newly revealed Project Q. Furthermore, their expansion into PC, Mobile, and Live Service gaming demonstrates their efforts to transform the accessibility and availability of their content.

While specific details, including pricing and an official name, are yet to be disclosed, Sony also announced the upcoming release of the PlayStation lineup's first-ever official wireless earbuds during the event. These earbuds promise lossless, low-latency audio, specifically tailored for gaming. Additionally, they can be connected to a PC or smartphone, showcasing their versatility. Given Sony's strong reputation in the headphone market, gamers can expect high-quality sound from these earbuds.
