PlayStation Forays Into Pro Gaming With Highly Customisable DualSense Edge Controllers

PSVR 2 launch date teased as well.

PlayStation controllers, be it the last-gen DualShock or the current-gen DualSense, were never really considered to be ideal for pro gaming. That was primarily because they lacked customisable features that pro PC gamers strive for, from precision mapping to accommodating multiple control profiles. All that is about to change as Sony has introduced the DualSense Edge for the PS5, the franchise’s first-ever high-performance controller designed with pro gaming in mind. Furthermore, Sony has also teased that the much-awaited PSVR 2, the platform’s upcoming virtual reality headset, is set to release in early 2023.

DualSense Edge: Deeper customisation

Perhaps the most striking feature of the new DualSense Edge controller is the deep level of customisation that it offers. From remapping or deactivating specific button inputs to fine-tuning your dead zone, the DualSense Edge has it all. For those unaware, dead zones are the distance your controller’s analogue stick moves before it is recognised within a game. You can also adjust the trigger buttons’ travel distance, which will come especially handy for professional FPS gamers, who need just that right amount of precision control to gain an edge over enemies during multiplayer sessions.

DualSense Edge: Inbuilt back controls

While back buttons are not really new for PlayStation users — separate units of back button attachments were earlier sold by Sony for its DualShock 4 controllers — the addition of the same in the DualSense Edge is a welcome change. These back buttons can be mapped to your liking, offering you even more control. The back buttons are swappable and you can switch between half-dome or lever to suit your comfort level. Additionally, the stick caps are also swappable — standard, high dome, and low dome. You can also replace your individual stick modules entirely if you wish, which will be sold separately.

DualSense Edge: Customisable control profiles

Pro gamers will attest to the fact that different games need different control profiles. For example, an FPS like Call of Duty might need a lesser trigger travel distance. On the other hand, an RPG like God of War Ragnarok might call for a more relaxed setup for longer hours of gaming. With the DualSense Edge, you can now create unique profiles for your controller settings and swap them depending on what you’re playing at the time.

The DualSense Edge controller will come with a dedicated Fn button that will let you adjust your setup on the fly. You will now be able to switch between your pre-set control profiles, access controller profile settings, or even adjust the game volume and chat balance as you need.

DualSense Edge: Carrying case

The DualSense Edge will come with a carrying case, that will hold the controller and all its components together securely. You will also get a braider USB Type-C cable, which locks into the controller via a special housing, ensuring it doesn’t disconnect by slipping out accidentally. You will also be able to charge your DualSense Edge via USB while it’s packed in the controller case.

DualSense Edge: Launch date

Sony hasn’t yet announced a launch timeline for the new DualSense Edge, but it can be expected to hit the shelves in the coming months.

PSVR 2: Launch date

Sony’s much-awaited virtual reality (VR) gaming headset, the PlayStation VR 2, has been teased to release in early 2023, as per a tweet by PlayStation France. No further details have been offered so far.
