Defense Derby Game Review: A Casual-At-Best Offering From BGMI-Maker Krafton

BGMI-maker Krafton has come out with a new tower defence game which delivers great graphics — but not much else.

Defense Derby is a new game that comes from the developers of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), Krafton, and attempts to offer a premium feel in the tower defence genre. The recently released Defense Derby is a real-time strategy hero-based player-versus-player tower defence game. A popular, recent example of a tower defence game would be Plants vs. Zombies. Defense Derby is available to download via Google Play store, Apple's App Store, and Samsung's Galaxy Store.

The release has garnered a lot of attention globally, as gamers have really high hopes from Krafton this time. Krafton has made a huge name for itself since BGMI's re-release in India and the same hype now influences the popularity of Defense Derby. This game in particular has been developed by Krafton's independent studio called RisingWings. Let us dive right into it and see how the game actually is and whether it stands close to its predecessor or not.

Defense Derby Game Review

As soon as you look at the cover image of the game upon opening it then you might get vibes of another giant of this genre i.e., Clash of Clans (CoC). However, it is not even remotely close. When you start the game, you will encounter a very short and less-informative tutorial. It is highly possible that you might not be able to grasp the concept of how the game is played but, a good 30-40 minutes into the game and clicking here and there will give you a slight understanding of the game.

Concept

The basic concept of the story is that you'll get various characters who possess distinct abilities and you will use those characters to defend your Tower. There are primarily two modes, in the first mode (PvP) you will be competing with other players worldwide and in the second mode (Blitz) you will be clearing stages to obtain resources. In the PvP mode, the developers have added a layer of betting. So, you start with three characters basically and then slowly as you win, you get to bid to have more characters that will defend your tower. You know the rules of bidding, the person who bids the most, wins. So, you will win that character and continue to defend your tower.

Story

There is no story at all. Yes, there's no backstory that you get to watch or hear rather the game will straight up begin with you competing with other players. It feels like each character has its own story, however, this horizon has been left unexplored by the developers. It would be really nice to get to know the characters a bit more rather than just identifying them with their character cards.

Gameplay

The gameplay is quite simple and plain. You'll get characters and you defend your tower, that's it. Yes, you can 'form strategies' to win those matches but after a certain time, the game loses its charm. It fails to hook the player that would make them feel like playing it for hours. This comes as a bit odd because BGMI also comes from Krafton and it is such a hooking game but alas, Defense Derby isn't as interesting as its predecessor.

Also, you might encounter some minor lags as well.

Graphics

The graphics of this game is noteworthy. The game offers an isometric top-down view which might look a bit old-fashioned to some but, it feels like the angle somewhat contains the essence of the game. There is a lot of detail in the graphics — outfits of the characters, their attacks, the area around the tower, etc. One of the downsides is that you can't zoom into the action, unlike Clash of Clans.

Music

The music in the game will give you similar vibes to that of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. It's soft and soothing, which complements the in-game sound effects that you'll get to hear during the battles. There are some games whose music throws players off as it is louder than the in-game sound effects itself, however, Defense Derby in this aspect is better than those games.

The voice of the characters in some way blend in with the music and at the same time it stands out when they speak something so, the balance there is very detailed and noteworthy.

Pros:

  • Good graphics
  • Soothing music

Cons:

  • Tutorial leaves begging for more
  • Minor lags
  • No connection with the characters due to a lack of their backstories

It is a decent game that you can play casually, however, it might fail to make an impression of a game that you would always return to with the same amount of interest as you had at first.

Rating (Out of 10): 5
