Fact Check: Viral Post Falsely Claims Trump Running Mate JD Vance, Wife Usha Greeted With Pro-India Chants At RNC 2024

Fact Check: A video claiming "India, India" chants at the Republican National Convention during Trump running mate J.D. Vance's entrance is false. The viral video has edited audio.

The Verdict [False]

In the original video, country music was playing in the background as Vance and his wife walked around greeting attendees, not pro-India chants.

What is the claim?

Social media users have shared a video of Republican vice-presidential nominee J.D. Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, greeting attendees at the Republican National Convention (RNC), in which chants of "India, India" are audible in the background. Donald Trump and Vance were officially nominated as the Republican presidential and vice-presidential nominees, respectively, on the first day of the convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on July 15.

A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared the video (archived here) with the caption, "The wife of Trump's new VP nominee Usha Chilukuri Vance is a lawyer of Indian heritage, a Hindu family. With @VivekGRamaswamy & @TulsiGabbard both playing prominent roles, it would appear Hindus have taken over Silicon Valley & US politics. "India-India!"

The post has garnered over 38,000 views so far. Other posts with the same claim can be viewed here and here.

Republican leader J.D. Vance is married to Usha Chilukuri Vance, a lawyer of Indian heritage from San Diego, California.

However, we found that different audio has been edited into a video of Vance and his wife walking in, and there were no pro-India chants.

What we found

The original video from the convention was uploaded to YouTube (archived here) by American public broadcaster PBS on July 16, 2024. We were able to match the exact frames featuring Vance and his wife, Usha. They can be seen greeting the attending delegates and supporters from the 1:05 to the 1:20 mark. The visuals match those seen in the viral video, but we can hear live country music in the background and no pro-India chants.

Similarly, the footage from the convention uploaded by C-SPAN (archived here) shows the Attorney General of Iowa, Brenna Bird, introducing Vance and Usha, who can then be seen entering the convention floor and greeting the attendees from the timestamp 3:30:45 to 3:31:29. Here too, country music can be heard as they walk around, but no chants.

We found that the chants were overlaid onto the original video of the Republican leader and his wife walking in. The audio is very similar to the one heard in this video (archived here), uploaded on YouTube in 2017. The video is titled "India India," and the caption states that it was recorded during a cricket match at Wankhade Stadium in Mumbai, India. The video shows people in blue cheering at a cricket stadium, and we can hear the same chants of "India" alternating with applause sounds.

The verdict

Audio of people chanting "India, India" has been added to a video showing Republican Party Vice Presidential nominee JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, greeting attendees at the Republican National Convention. The original video shows country music playing in the background, and there are no "India-India" chants.
