Fact Check: China Theme Park Video Shared As ‘Footage Of Attacks On Hindus In Bangladesh’

A post widely shared on X featured the video with the caption, ‘Spread this to as many people as possible so that caste-divided Hindus and the secular governments busy with elections can wake up!’

The Verdict: False The video was recorded in October 2018 at a Halloween-themed event at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom Theme Park in China, and is unrelated to Bangladesh.

(Trigger warning: The story may contain disturbing visuals.)

What’s the claim?

Amid rising tensions in Bangladesh and reports of alleged attacks on the country’s Hindu community, a disturbing video has gone viral on social media. The video, purportedly showing a human corpse being grilled over a coal fire, is being shared with claims that it depicts recent atrocities committed against Hindus in Bangladesh.

A post widely shared on X featured the video with the Hindi caption, which translates to, “All Hindus, along with the central and state governments of India, should take note of this! The torture of Hindu brothers and sisters in Bangladesh has reached its peak! Spread this to as many people as possible so that caste-divided Hindus and the secular governments busy with elections can wake up!”

However, we found that the video does not show recent events in Bangladesh, nor does it show violence against Hindus. Instead, it originates from China and was recorded during a Halloween-themed event in 2018.

What we found

Our research showed that the “corpse” is not a real human body but a dummy installed at a Halloween-themed event at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, a theme park in Hengqin, Zhuhai, China.

Using reverse image search on various keyframes from the viral clip, Logically Facts discovered a slightly longer version of the video on Instagram (archived here). It was posted by the account ‘galaxychimelong’, which frequently shares content from Chimelong Ocean Kingdom.

The Instagram video features close-up visuals of the roasting scene, with a man dressed in a Halloween-themed costume appearing to grill it.

Logically Facts found another similar video of the Halloween-themed event at the same park, shared on Facebook by Sillynanomag (archived here), a media network based in China on October 17, 2018. In this video, at the 0:36 timestamp, individuals can be seen touching the body resembling a human figure over a fire pit — similar to the scene featured in the now-viral clip.

Upon closer examination, several details in the Sillynanomag video align with those in the viral footage. The background visuals, such as the setup and decor, are notably similar. The same individual dressed in a costume with a horror-themed outfit, previously observed in the Instagram video by ‘galaxychimelong’, also appears here. Other distinctive elements, including bamboo sticks and banana leaves, are visible in the scene, confirming the connection to the Halloween party at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China.

Additionally, we found another news report from the prominent Chinese outlet Sin Chew Daily, published on January 14, 2020, which sheds light on the origins of the viral clip. The report explained that the video had previously been misattributed to Nigeria.

The article clarified that these allegations were false and that the video was, in fact, recorded in October 2018 during a Halloween-themed party at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom Theme Park in Zhuhai, China.

We also found similar visuals from the theme park in a YouTube vlog (archived here) posted by the channel ‘SviatMe’. The video, titled: “Halloween Party at Chimelong Ocean Park | Zhuhai, China | SviatMe,” showcases highlights from the park’s Halloween celebrations in October 2018.

At the 5:12 mark of the video, we can see the park’s elaborate Halloween-themed displays, which include props and theatrics designed to create a chilling atmosphere. These displays featured lifelike figures and body parts arranged in dramatic scenes which were purely decorative.

The verdict

The footage originates from a Halloween-themed event at Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Zhuhai, China, in October 2018. It does not show any recent “atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh”.
