Mirzapur Controversy: SC Issues Notice To Makers & Amazon Prime Video; Here's All You Need To Know

A Mirzapur resident filed a petition before the Supreme Court, complaining against the portrayal of his native place in the web series 'Mirzapur'.

The Supreme Court issued a notice to the makers of ‘Mirzapur’ and Amazon Prime Video on a plea of a resident of Mirzapur, who accused them of spoiling the image of his hometown and portraying it in a bad light in the web series. The apex court sought a response from the producers of the web series over the same.

Sujeet Kumar Singh, who filed the plea through advocate Binay Kumar Das, expressed his displeasure over the content and said that the makers showcased Mirzapur as a ‘city of goons and adulteresses’. A bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde issued a notice to the OTT platform, Excel Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. and the Centre on Thursday, a report in IANS said.

The petitioner raised objection over the portyal of a woman (Beena Tripathi, played by Rasika Dugal), who maintained a sexual affair with her father-in-law and the servant. He said that the makers insulted the rick culture of Mirzapur by showing such ‘shameless and ridiculous’ things.

In his plea, Sujeet Kumar Singh contended that the Central government should introduce guidelines to prevent the bad portrayal of historical and cultural values of any place.

A case was earlier filed against the makers of the web series at Mirzapur on January 18. In his complaint, Arvind Chaturvedi accused the producers and creators of hurting religious sentiments and damaging the social harmony. Uttar Pradesh Police officials have reached Mumbai to investigate the FIR.

‘Mirzapur’, which received a good response from the audience, has been mired in controversies since the time of its release. The second season of the series premiered on October 23 on Amazon Prime Video. Last year, Mirzapur's MP and Apna Dal national President Anupriya Patel requested PM Narendra Modi and UP CM Yogi Aditynath to initiate an inquiry against the web series.

Amazon Prime Video, which is one of the leading OTT platforms across the world, has remained in limelight for all the wrong reasons. Its recently launched series ‘Tandav’ received flak from BJP leaders for its content. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting had sought an explanation from the streaming giant after it received complaints against the web series.

Ali Abbas Zafar, who is the director of the series, issued a statement to announce that he would make changes in scenes. He said that the makers had no intentions of hurting the sentiments of the an individual or community.
