Sampurna On Hoichoi tells the story of a married woman, who is a victim of sexual violence at home. The story shows how a woman stands against her own family to fight for self-respect and rights.

Kolkata: A new web series is releasing on Bengali OTT platform Hoichoi on Friday, July 29. Starring Sohini Sarkar and Rajnandini Pal in leading roles, ‘Sampurna’ is directed by Sayantan Ghosal and deals with the much debated subject of marital rape. It also features actors Prantik Banerjee, Anubhab Kanjilal, and Laboni Sarkar, among other actors.

The series tells the story of a married woman, who is a victim of sexual violence at home, perpetrated by her husband. The story shows how a woman stands against her own family to fight for self-respect and rights.

Hoichoi dropped the trailer of Sampurna last week and it begins with a wedding where Rajnandini ties the knot with Anubhab. Sampurna, played by Sohini, who is Anubhab’s sister-in-law, learns soon that the new bride is a victim of marital rape. There begins her fight against her own husband and her own family, besides the society, as she takes a stand in favour of the newly married girl who is a new addition to the family.

In an interview, Ghosal said the story of Sampurna is very important to him because it is a topic that needs to be spoken about aloud. He said there should be more awareness about marital rape in society as he thinks “a lot of people carry a faulty belief about marriage and its correlation with consent”. “...‘no’ in any situation means only 'no’, irrespective of the relationship between the two individuals,” he said.

Sohini has also spoken about the series and the role she plays. She said all women must take a stand for themselves, and that the series wishes to send out a message and educate the masses on the important issue.
