John Christopher Depp II, popularly known as Johnny Depp, turns 59 today. Over the years, the American actor, producer, and musician has played many memorable characters on screen. 

Lets look back at the career of the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild winner, and his cherished friendship with Director Tim Burton. Burton and Depp have now been working for twenty-two years, with 'Dark Shadows' being their most recent project.

 Ed Wood (1994)

This is not just one of the finest Burton/Depp collaborations, but it is also the best Tim Burton film. This bizarre movie is about Ed Wood. In the film, Ed has a dream of becoming a renowned Hollywood director, who is ironically remembered as one of the worst filmmakers in history. He is a weird character who makes low-quality films with very odd characters.

Sleepy Hollow

One of the reasons Burton decided to direct Sleepy Hollow was because it was the type of production he loved as a youngster, and he wanted to introduce it to his children and also pay respect to Hammer Productions masterpieces. The film contains more gore than one may expect. Sleepy Hollow is by far the most enjoyable Depp/Burton films.

Charlie and The Chocolate Factory

Another literary classic that Burton gave as a fresh perspective was on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a 1964 novel by Roald Dahl that was made into a film for the first time in 1971. Director Burton was quite clear about whom he wanted for the role, and ofcourse it was Johnny.

Corpse Bride

Corpse Bride is one of Tim Burton’s best known films, combining his dark style with the Stop Motion Technique. 
It was the first time Johnny Depp voiced an animated character. The film received several awards and was also nominated for the Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. 

Alice in Wonderland

In 2010, Tim Burton collaborated with Walt Disney Pictures to create a film about Alice (Mia Wasikowska). This film was nominated for three Academy Awards and won two of them. Burton also directed a sequel titled ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’ which performed poorly with critics. 

Johnny has had a magnificent career. The 20th cousin of Elizabeth II, is also a musician and has played guitar on various songs and appeared in many music videos. 

However in recent times Depp has been in lime light for the defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard. Though Depp gained a near-total victory in his defamation suit, it costed him almost everything.
