Unni Mukundan Confirms Marco Sequel Is Shelved: 'Too Much Negativity Around The Project'

Actor Unni Mukundan has officially announced that he will not be moving forward with a sequel to his 2024 Malayalam action hit Marco.

In a surprising turn of events, Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan has confirmed that the sequel to his blockbuster action film Marco has been shelved due to excessive negativity surrounding the project. The actor took to his Instagram handle to share the news with his fans, responding to a query about the film's second installment.

The update was shared via Unni Mukundan’s Instagram story, where a curious fan asked, “Marco 2 kab ayegi (When will Marco 2 release)?” In response, the actor politely clarified, “Bro, apologies, I have dropped plans to continue the Marco series. Too much negativity around the project. I'll try my best to bring something bigger and better than Marco. Thanks for all the love and positivity. Cheers."

Fans were left disheartened after hearing that Marco 2 is no longer in the works.

The Controversy Surrounding Marco

The decision to scrap Marco 2 comes after the first film faced intense scrutiny for its graphic violence and dark themes. Despite its commercial success, raking in a whopping Rs 104 crore globally, the film's violent nature sparked heated debates among audiences and critics alike.

The CBFC had to issue certain restrictions for its theatrical screening, and the film's OTT release further escalated the controversy.

More About Marco

Marco served as a spin-off centered on Unni Mukundan’s character from Haneef Adeni’s 2019 action-drama Mikhael, which originally starred Nivin Pauly in the lead. The ensemble cast of Marco included Kabir Duhan Singh, Yukti Thareja, Anson Paul, Siddique, Arjun Nandakumar, Durva Thaker, and Abhimanyu Shammy Thilakan, among others.

The film featured a powerful background score composed by KGF fame Ravi Basrur, while Chandru Selvaraj handled the cinematography and Shameer Muhammed took charge of editing. It was jointly produced by Shareef Muhammed under the banner of Cubes Entertainments and Unni Mukundan’s own production house.

While Marco 2 may be off the table, Unni Mukundan seems determined to bounce back with an even "bigger and better project". The actor has been teasing his fans with updates about his upcoming role, showcasing his physical transformation and hinting at a new journey.
