Kantara Actor Rishab Shetty Criticises Bollywood After National Award Win, Netizens Call Him 'Jealous Soul'

Kannada actor and filmmaker Rishab Shetty, who rose to nationwide fame with his 2022 hit 'Kantara', is once again in the spotlight.

Kannada actor and filmmaker Rishab Shetty, who rose to nationwide fame with his 2022 hit 'Kantara', is once again in the spotlight. Recently honoured with a National Film Award for his performance in 'Kantara', Shetty has been busy promoting the upcoming Kannada film 'Laughing Buddha', starring Pramod Shetty. However, it’s a recent interview with MetroSaga that has generated significant buzz online.

Kantara actor Rishab Shetty criticises Bollywood

In the interview, a clip of which has gone viral, Rishab Shetty openly criticised Bollywood for its portrayal of India at international film festivals. Speaking in Kannada, Shetty voiced his frustration with how Bollywood films often present India in a negative light on the global stage.

He remarked, "Indian films, especially Bollywood, show India in a bad light. These art films are invited to global events and given a red carpet. My nation, my state, my language—my pride. Why not showcase them positively on a global platform? That’s what I strive to do."

Netizens' Reactions

Shetty's comments have sparked a heated debate online, with some netizens labeling him a "Bollywood hater" and accusing him of hypocrisy. Critics pointed to a scene in 'Kantara' where his character pinches a female character's waist without her consent, calling out the film's problematic content.

One user wrote, "Such a jealous soul. A die-hard Bollywood hater. He begged the Bollywood audience to support his overrated film filled with problematic content.” Another added, “Success is temporary, but pinching female waists and bashing Bollywood is permanent.”

Analysts have weighed in on the controversy, with some defending Bollywood as the only Indian industry recognized internationally, helping other Indian films gain global traction. One critic commented, "Not showing those realities on screen won’t change the living conditions in India. When you live in a posh apartment, surrounded by elite people and 20 servants holding an umbrella for you, you forget there’s another world out there."

Rishab Shetty's work front

Rishab Shetty's remarks have ignited a broader discussion about how India is portrayed in Bollywood movies. Meanwhile, his film 'Laughing Buddha' is set to hit theaters on August 30.

On August 16, Rishab Shetty was awarded the National Award for Best Actor for his role in 'Kantara'. The pan-India blockbuster also won the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. 'Kantara: Chapter 1', a prequel to the original film, is in the works, exploring the lore of the Panchurli Deiva during the Kadamba era. Shetty will return as both the lead actor and director, with Ajaneesh Loknath reprising his role as music director, promising another captivating score.
