Actor-Producer Soubin Shahir Held In Manjummel Boys Fraud Case, Released On Bail

Malayalam actor and producer Soubin Shahir has been arrested in connection with an alleged financial fraud tied to the blockbuster 'Manjummel Boys'.

Malayalam actor and producer Soubin Shahir has been arrested in connection with an alleged financial fraud tied to the blockbuster 'Manjummel Boys'. The arrest comes after his father Babu Shahir and business associate Shawn Antony were also taken into custody following police interrogation. All three were later released on anticipatory bail granted by the High Court.

Why was Soubin Shahir arrested?

The controversy centres around Parava Films, Soubin’s production banner, which has been under the scanner for allegedly misappropriating ₹7 crore. Authorities have alleged that Soubin may have orchestrated the fraudulent activity even before production on 'Manjummel Boys' began. Police have insisted that a thorough investigation is necessary to track the film’s actual financing and expenditure.

Allegations against Soubin's banner

The complaint was originally filed by Siraj Valiyaveettil, who claims he invested ₹7 crore into the film after being informed the total production cost would be ₹22 crore. However, he later learned the film had reportedly been completed at a cost of ₹18.65 crore. Siraj also alleged that he was denied the 40% share in profits that had been promised to him.

Adding to the legal troubles, the Income Tax Department raided Soubin’s office in 2024 over allegations of tax evasion and undisclosed financial documents.

About Manjummel Boys

Despite the controversy, 'Manjummel Boys' turned out to be a massive commercial success. According to Sacnilk, the film earned ₹140 crore at the domestic box office and raked in ₹240 crore globally, becoming Malayalam cinema’s highest-grossing film until the arrival of 'L2: Empuraan'.

Directed and written by Chidambaram, 'Manjummel Boys' was inspired by a real-life rescue at the Guna Caves in 2006, where a group of friends risked everything to save one of their own. The film was widely appreciated for its gripping narrative and emotional core, celebrating themes of friendship and perseverance and was liked by people across India.
