Abhay Deol Criticizes His Own Film ‘Raanjhanaa’ Starring Sonam Kapoor And Dhanush For Glorifying 'Sexual Harassment & Stalking'

The ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ actor recently took to his social media and penned down a note on his film ‘Raanjhaana’ saying that the theme leads to sexual violence of some sort. Read on.

New Delhi: Abhay Deol is one of the most underrated actors of his generation. He has been displaying his command on the craft through his performances as an actor in movies like ‘Dev D’, ‘Shanghai’, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, ‘Raanjhanaa’ and others. The ‘Chopsticks’ actor started off with his career with the movie ‘Socha Na Tha’ opposite Ayesha Takia in the year 2005. Though Abhay belongs to the family of the veteran actor Dharmendra, he has been calling out the film industry for ‘lobbyism’, ‘favouritism’ and ‘nepotism’. Lucky Oye!’ actor took to his social media and slammed his own film ‘Raanjhanaa’, saying that the movie glorifies sexual harassment. He said that it has been the main theme in Bollywood for decades where a boy stalks a girl until she relents. The ‘Zero’ actor shared screenshots of a review of the movie done by a user and went on to write that History will not look kindly into this film for its regressive message. His caption read, “Such clear and valid insight from @oldschoolrebel9 regarding the film Raanjhana. History will not look kindly at this film for its regressive message. It’s been a theme in Bollywood for decades, where a boy can (and should), pursue a girl until she relents. Only in cinema does she do that willfully. In reality we have seen time and again that it leads to sexual violence of some sort. Glorifying it on screen only leads to blaming the victim, as @oldschoolrebel9 explains it so brilliantly. Please do take time out to read her observations in the pics above. #shedoesnotlikeyou #growup #gloryfyingsexualharrasment”
After Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, Deol took to his social media and shared his experience against Bollywood’s ‘lobbyism’ where both Farhan Akhtar and he were nominated in award shows as ‘supporting actors’. He also mentioned the fact that Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif were nominated as ‘actors in a leading role’. The ‘Happy Bhaag Jayegi’ actor further wrote that he boycotted the awards for the same reason; however, Farhan Akhtar was okay with it.
On the professional front, Abhay Deol was last seen in the Hindi drama film ‘What Are The Odds’ by Megha Ramaswamy. This movie was released on Netflix on 20th May, 2020.
