Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ To Become First Tamil Film To Release In IMAX

Ponniyin Selvan: I, the highly awaited first installment of Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan series, will make history as the first film ever made in Tamil to be shown in the IMAX format.

New Delhi: Ponniyin Selvan: I, the highly awaited first installment of Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan series, will make history as the first film ever made in Tamil to be shown in the IMAX format. The IMAX Corporation and Lyca Productions have formed a collaboration to distribute the movie to IMAX theatres on September 30 throughout India and the rest of the globe.

The news was announced on the official Twitter account of Madras Talkies, the production company of the movie. The caption on the post reads, "Grand gets Grander! Experience #PS1 in IMAX, the first Tamil film to come out in IMAX In theatres on 30th September!.”

The film, which is based on a classic novel written in Tamil by Kalki Krishnamurthy and takes place in the 10th century, centres on the early life of Chola Prince Arunmozhi Varman, who later became known as the great Chola emperor Raja Raja Chola and was the most powerful king in South India at the time. The novel was originally written in Tamil. He is famous for restoring the dominion of the Chola empire and ensuring that it maintained its superiority in Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean.

The Tamil cinema industry is expecting big things from Ponniyin Selvan, which is why many people are keeping their fingers crossed. A total of Rs. 500 crores was spent on the production of the franchise's two parts.

The cast has a number of well-known actors and actresses, including Chiyaan Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, and Sobhita Dhulipala, amongst others. It is the first film that Vikram and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have done with Mani Ratnam following their collaboration with Raavanan (2010).

The epic drama was concurrently filmed in Hindi under the title Raavan, with Abhishek Bachchan playing the character originated by the Kollywood actor in the film's Tamil version. While the Hindi translation of Raavanan was met with favourable reviews, the film's box office performance fell short of what had been anticipated.

The movie Ponniyin Selvan is scheduled to be released in theatres on September 30 in the following languages: Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
