Shahid Kapoor Defends Kabir Singh, Talks About Appeal Of Grey Characters: ‘Mere Andar Se Ek Pride Hai…’

Shahid Kapoor, who is currently promoting his upcoming film ‘Deva’, recently discussed his choice of complex, grey characters, including his role in ‘Kabir Singh’ (2019). The film sparked controversy, with many accusing it of glorifying toxic masculinity. In a conversation with HT City, Shahid expressed pride in the film, calling it a dream come true and defending the portrayal of the character.

Shahid shared, “I’m just very proud of that film. Toh mere na andar se ek pride hai that we did something, which is… see because mere liye naa playing a character who has issues or a character who has grey shades, or a character who has dark shades, or a character who has things that might be disturbing, as the protagonist of the film, like it's my dream come true.”
Shahid said that while growing up, he always saw heroes as "good" characters. But after watching performances like Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver and Al Pacino in Scarface, he wanted to explore more complex roles.

Shahid Kapoor on playing grey characters
He added. “It’s not a personal judgement of me. I don’t need to like the character I play. I need to be able to understand the character I play. People should choose to like or dislike. And if they dislike a character I play I feel I have won because I was able to convince them not to like me. And I think that is so interesting as an actor.”
Shahid Kapoor is all set for the release of ‘Deva’ on January 31, where he plays a fearless cop. Pooja Hegde stars alongside him as a journalist in this highly anticipated film.
