Nearly three months after Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan was injured in a stabbing incident during a suspected burglary attempt, the Mumbai police have filed a chargesheet in the case. The document, running over 1000 pages, details crucial findings and witness accounts related to the attack, which took place at Khan’s Bandra residence.
According to ANI, The Bandra Police confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that the chargesheet has been submitted in court along with extensive evidence against the accused, identified as Shariful Islam.
The chargesheet details findings related to the attack
“This chargesheet includes several pieces of evidence found by the police against the arrested accused, Shariful Islam. This chargesheet is more than 1000 pages long. The report of the forensic lab has also been mentioned in this chargesheet, which states that the knife pieces found at the crime scene, from Saif Ali Khan's body and from the accused, are three pieces of the same knife. At the same time, the fingerprint report of the accused's left hand found by the police during the investigation has also been mentioned,” ANI quoted Mumbai Police as saying
The chargesheet incorporates testimonies from over 70 individuals, including Saif, his wife Kareena Kapoor, household staff, and others. It reconstructs the sequence of events leading up to and following the attack, revealing how the accused evaded initial security measures before carrying out the assault.
Details of the attack
According to the investigation, Shariful Islam first tried to enter through the main entrance but failed to bypass the building's fingerprint authentication system. He then accessed the premises through a rear duct area and climbed to the first floor. From there, he ascended to the eighth floor using the stairwell and entered the actor’s flat armed with a knife, hammer, and hacksaw blade.
“Shariful climbed up to the 8th floor using the staircase and entered Saif Ali Khan’s flat. He was carrying a knife, a hacksaw blade, and a hammer in his bag. He attacked the caretaker, Eliyama Philip, with the knife and demanded ₹1 crore,” a report by Midday quoted a police officer as saying.
As the attack on the caretaker unfolded, Saif intervened and attempted to subdue the intruder. “The accused tried to stab Saif without realising who he was. His motive was robbery—he didn’t know he was attacking Saif Ali Khan. Once he realised what had happened, he panicked and fled,” added the officer.
What happened after the assault
Following the assault, Shariful reportedly changed his clothes at a nearby bus stop, discarded the weapon and his old attire in the Bandra Talao area.
He later made his way to Bandra railway station, where he lingered for about 20 minutes before heading to Dadar. The suspect arrived at Dadar station by 8:45 am. CCTV footage from Dadar West captured him at 9:00 am purchasing headphones from a local vendor and eating bhurji pav. “He visited Ikara Mobile Shop and purchased a wired headphone for Rs 50,” police officer told Mid-Dayr. After this, he walked back to his home in Worli. Nearly 70 hours after the incident, he was tracked down and arrested from the Ghodbunder area in Thane, where he had been hiding in thick mangroves.
A fingerprint recovered from the duct area later matched that of the accused, strengthening the case against him.
About the attack
The violent incident took place in January when an armed intruder entered Saif Ali Khan’s home with the intent to rob. The confrontation turned physical, resulting in the actor sustaining injuries to his thoracic spine and other areas. He was promptly taken to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent surgery.
