Neena Gupta Recalls When She Was Kicked Out By Her Aunt: ‘I Had Nowhere To Go With A Baby’

In a recent interview, Neena Gupta recalled the time when her aunt threw her out in the middle of the night and kicked her out when Masaba was little.

Veteran actress Neena Gupta has always been candid about her personal and professional journey. In a recent interview with Housing.com, the actor shared an inspiring yet challenging chapter of her life - her housing struggles after moving from Delhi to Mumbai in the early 1980s.

Neena Gupta on buying apartment

Initially, Neena lived in a shared apartment before buying her first home with support from her parents. This marked the beginning of a pattern for her: avoiding rentals entirely and instead upgrading her living spaces. “As I earned more, I would sell my current apartment, add more money, and buy a better one,” she said.

However, this process wasn’t without hardships. While transitioning between homes, Neena experienced a particularly difficult time that left her homeless with her young daughter, Masaba.

When she was thrown out in the middle of the night

Neena recalled that during one such transition, she had sold her existing apartment and booked a 3-BHK flat in a new project by a reputed builder. With most of her money tied up in the new property, she moved in with her aunt and uncle, hoping for temporary shelter. “I shifted to my aunt’s house where I had stayed before. I thought I stay there so much of the time and I just come back to my house to sleep. Since Masaba was little then, my aunt used to help in looking after the baby,” she shared.

Things took a shocking turn when her aunt abruptly asked her to leave. “But one day, she threw me out in the middle of the night, she kicked me out,” Neena revealed. I had no money left. There was this one night where I had nowhere to go with a baby,” she recounted.

Neena's uncle gave her temporary accommodation

Amid this crisis, her uncle had a change of heart and offered her temporary accommodation in an unused flat in Juhu. “Before shifting with them, I had already told both of them that I am now going to be without a house so are you okay with me moving in? They said yes then. Now uncle felt very bad so he shifted me to his mother-in-law’s house in Juhu which had been shut for 20 years,” Neena said.

Despite being run-down, with cobwebs and a rusty appearance, the house became her refuge. “I went there and I cleaned that house with a small baby. But soon, I was asked to leave that house as well,” she added.

Desperate for a solution, Neena approached the builder she had paid for the new flat and requested her money back. “I asked him if it was possible to get my money back, I don’t want that house. He gave me money back, didn’t even deduct a penny,” she said.

With the refunded money, Neena purchased a home in Aram Nagar, where she finally found stability for herself and Masaba.
