Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 Set for April 2026 Release; Actor Says 'Fan Base For Film Is...'

Emraan Hashmi announces Awarapan 2, the sequel to his cult hit. Filming begins July 2025, with a theatrical release set for April 3, 2026.

Emraan Hashmi has officially announced the sequel to his much-loved 2007 film Awarapan. Known for its iconic soundtrack — especially the timeless hit Tera Mera Rishta — the original film left a lasting impression on audiences and has since become a cult classic.

Titled Awarapan 2, the sequel is slated to hit theatres on April 3, 2026. The original film, co-starring Shriya Saran, had a modest box office run but gradually gained massive popularity on digital platforms, leading to a resurgence in recent years.

Speaking to News18 Showsha, Emraan revealed that filming for Awarapan 2 will begin by the end of July 2025. Over the past year, Awarapan has seen renewed interest on social media, with fans praising the emotional depth and on-screen chemistry between the lead pair. However, Emraan clarified that the sequel isn’t just a response to recent online buzz.

“The public demand has been there for 15 years. The fan base of that film is crazy!” Emraan said.

He also shared a memorable fan encounter that reignited his passion for the project:“About six months ago, a guy approached me at a coffee shop in Dubai. He had a tattoo dedicated to Awarapan, featuring a pigeon and a symbol of freedom. That’s when I messaged Vishesh (Bhatt) and Mukesh Bhatt ji and told them — we’re doing something right.”

Emraan further revealed that the script has been in the works for nearly two years:“We’ve been working on the script of the sequel for almost two years. We didn’t want to make a sequel just for the sake of it. It just so happened that we were finally happy with the script this year.”

Reflecting on the film’s unexpected legacy, he added:“Awarapan picked up over time through the internet, YouTube, satellite, and even Torrent. That’s how it developed such a huge fan base. A film’s journey doesn’t end with cinemas — if it’s good, people will find it.”

Speaking about the enduring impact of the film, Emraan noted:“It wasn’t a huge success in 2007, but today, it’s arguably my most successful film. What it didn’t do at the box office then, it has done over the past 20 years. That film has aged so well. There was a truth in my performance, and that’s when I told myself — I only want to do performance-driven films.”

With Awarapan 2 on the horizon, fans can expect a powerful continuation of a story that has resonated deeply over the years. As anticipation builds, all eyes are on Emraan Hashmi to recreate the emotional magic once more.
