Diljit Dosanjh Says He Will Stop Singing About Alcohol If Govt Declares Nationwide Ban: 'Bohut Bada Revenue Hai Yeh...'

Diljit Dosanjh advocated for a nationwide movement to ban alcohol, acknowledging its significant revenue but promising that he would stop singing songs about alcohol if such a ban were implemented.

Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh has once again spoken out against the Telangana government’s notice to him. In a recent video posted on Instagram, he addressed how simple it would be for him to modify the lyrics of his songs. During his concert in Ahmedabad, he also mentioned that he does not drink alcohol or endorse alcohol-related advertisements.

Diljit further advocated for a nationwide movement to ban alcohol, acknowledging its significant revenue but promising that he would stop singing songs about alcohol if such a ban were implemented.

Diljit Dosanjh on changing lyrics of his songs

Diljit began the video by sharing some “good news”—he did not receive any notice during his Ahmedabad show. He added another positive update: he would refrain from singing songs about alcohol, especially as Gujarat is a dry state. The singer highlighted that he has produced many devotional songs, including two recent ones, but lamented that these do not receive as much attention.

Speaking on his stance, Diljit emphasised, “Main khud sharab nahi peete (I don't drink alcohol).” He added, “Bollywood ke jo kalakaar hai woh sharab ki advertisement karte hai, Diljit Dosanjh advertisement nahi karta. Aap mujhe chhedo mat. Main jaha jata hoon chup karke apna programme karta hoon, chala jata hoon. Aap kyu chedh rahe ho mujhe (Bollywood artists do advertisements for alcohol, Diljit Dosanjh doesn't. Don’t mess with me. Wherever I go, I do my performance and leave. Why are you messing with me)?”

Diljit proposed a nationwide initiative, saying, “Jitni bhi states hai humare yaha, agar woh saari apne aap ko dry state ghoshith kardeti hai, agle hi din Diljit Dosanjh apni life mein kabhi sharab pe gaana nahi gayega. Main pran karta hoon. Hosakta yeh? (Laughs) Bohut bada revenue hai yeh. Corona mein sab bandh hogaya tha, theke bandh nahi huye the. Kya baatein karrahe ho aap? Aap youth ko fuddu nahi bana sakte (If all of India’s states declare themselves dry states, then Diljit Dosanjh won't ever sing songs on alcohol. I promise. Can that happen? It’s a huge revenue. Everything closed down during Covid-19 except alcohol shops. What are you saying? You can't fool the youth).”

The singer also talked about an alternative solution: “Jaha jaha mere show hai waha waha aap ek din k liye dry day ghoshith kardo, main sharaab ka gaana nahi gaunga (Wherever I have my shows, you declare it a dry day for one day, and I won't sing songs on alcohol). It’s very easy for me. Again I'm telling you, it's easy for me to tweak songs. Main koi naya kalakaar thodei hoon. Ki aap usko yeh bologe ki 'Yeh yeh yeh gaana nahi gasakta' aur main bolunga, 'Aare main kya karunga'? Main gaane ko tweak kardunga, gaana change hojayega aur utna hi maza ayega (Am I a new artist that if you tell him not to sing such songs, he’ll be confused? I’ll tweak the songs, change them, and the fun will remain).”

Diljit expressed admiration for the Gujarat government, saying he was a fan and fully supported its dry state status. He also expressed a desire for Amritsar to become a dry city. He concluded the video by reaffirming that if alcohol shops were shut down across the nation, he would stop performing songs that mention alcohol.

Why did Diljit get notice from Telangana govt?

The issue arose after the Telangana government issued a legal notice to Diljit, instructing him not to perform songs that promote alcohol, drugs, or violence at his concert in Hyderabad. The notice, issued just hours before the event, referenced specific songs like “Patiala Peg” and “Panchatara.”

As part of his ongoing Dil-Luminati Tour, Diljit will perform next in Lucknow on November 22, followed by shows in Pune on November 24, Kolkata on November 30, Bengaluru on December 6, Indore on December 8, Chandigarh on December 14, and will conclude in Guwahati on December 29.
