Released in December 2023, 'Laapataa Ladies' is a critically acclaimed film that tells the story of two brides who are mistakenly swapped in rural India during the 1990s. Directed by Kiran Rao, the film’s engaging narrative and stellar performances won widespread praise. It is well known that Aamir Khan, who produced the film, was keen on playing the role of SI Shyam Manohar, which eventually went to Ravi Kishan. The superstar even auditioned for the part, but later stepped back after seeing Ravi’s screen test. Now, a clip of Aamir’s audition is going viral.
Aamir Khan’s unseen audition for Laapataa Ladies
The video, unveiled on Aamir Khan’s new YouTube channel, Aamir Khan Talkies, on Wednesday, offers a glimpse of the superstar stepping into the shoes of SI Shyam Manohar. Dressed in a police uniform, his hair slicked back and a paan tucked in his mouth, Aamir is seen delivering dialogues from the film while seated behind a desk. The footage also features some amusing bloopers, along with variations in Aamir’s portrayal of the character as he experimented with different mannerisms and body language.
Netizens react
The audition video quickly sparked discussions online. While some fans appreciated Aamir’s take on the role, the general consensus was that Ravi Kishan was the perfect fit. One user commented, "Aamir sir isn’t compatible for this role. Ravi Kishan did a far better job." Another echoed the sentiment, writing, "No doubt Aamir is a brilliant actor, but this role was tailor-made for Ravi Kishan."
Several viewers pointed out that casting Aamir in the role would have made the character arc predictable. A fan reasoned, "If Aamir played the role, the twist wouldn’t have been as impactful." Another added, "Had Aamir taken up the part, the transformation of the corrupt cop turning good wouldn’t have been as surprising. Ravi Kishan’s portrayal kept the intrigue alive."
The story behind the casting choice
During ABP Ideas Of India in 2024, the actor narrated how he insisted on giving the screen test. "As I offered the script to Kiran, I told her I would want to do this role. Kiran said, 'You are a big star; you will disbalance my small film.' I then insisted on giving the screen test, and I think I was very good. But after watching the audition, we both felt that if I will be in the film as a star, people’s expectations would change. So we felt that I should not be in the film,” he said.
The actor had also said that he would upload his audition video after the film's release.
