Aamir Khan Recalls How Javed Miandad’s Last-Ball Six Ruined His Secret Wedding Day

Aamir Khan revealed that his secret wedding to Reena Dutta went unnoticed at home due to an India-Pakistan match—and Javed Miandad’s iconic last-ball six left him in “depression” that day.

Before Aamir Khan became the “perfectionist” of Bollywood, he was just a 21-year-old in love. His romance with Reena Dutta, his neighbour, was straight out of a film script, complete with secrecy, family opposition, and an unexpected cameo from a cricketing icon.

In a candid chat with 'The Lallantop', Aamir revisited the day he secretly married Reena. The two were young and deeply in love, but her parents weren’t in favour of the relationship. So, fearing separation, they decided to quietly register their marriage. Aamir waited until March 14 to turn 21, the legal age required for a man to marry, and within days, they became husband and wife, without telling their families.

However, their secret didn’t cause as much commotion at home as they had feared, thanks to a cricket match. “We thought our families will question us about being so late,” Aamir said. But fate had other plans.

It happened to be the same day India was playing Pakistan in a nail-biting ODI. The entire household was glued to the TV, including Aamir himself. But what should have been a joyful post-wedding evening took an unexpected turn, Javed Miandad hit a dramatic last-ball six that snatched victory from India and sent Aamir into a funk.

“It was India-Pakistan match day. The same match where Javed Miandad hit a six on the last ball,” he recalled. “We were winning that match so nobody cared to ask us about our absence for so long. I too joined them and was watching cricket, however, Javed’s six ruined it all.”

The memory stayed with Aamir long enough for him to bring it up years later when he met Miandad on a flight. “Javed bhai aapne theek nahi kiya. Aapne meri shadi barbaad kardi,” he told the cricketer. Miandad, baffled, asked why. “Usi din aapne chakka mara tha. Depression mein chala gaya tha mai,” Aamir said.

Eventually, the secret marriage came to light, leading to family turmoil. Reena’s parents were so devastated that they cut ties with her, and her father even suffered a heart attack. That incident, however, proved to be a turning point. With time, the families reconciled. In a twist of fate, Aamir’s sister Farhat went on to marry Reena’s brother Rajeev, further cementing the bond between the two households.

Aamir and Reena were married for 16 years before parting ways in 2002. The two continue to co-parent their children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan, and remain on amicable terms.
