UP Congress president Raj Babbar sends resignation to Rahul Gandhi over party's performance in Lok Sabha polls

New Delhi: A day after Congress’ poor performance in Lok Sabha elections stunned the national party, with reports of Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s resignation also surfacing; Uttar Pradesh Congress President Raj Babbar on Friday sent his resignation to party Chief over party’s poor performance in Lok Sabha polls. Shattering the hopes of Congress, the saffron party swept the polls in Uttar Pradesh by bagging over 60 seats, whereas the SP-BSP alliance was only able to bag only around 15 seats. Earlier in the day, reports of Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s resignation also surfaced as the party Chief accepted his defeat on Thursday. As per reports, Gandhi had offered to resign soon after the results were out, but his mother Sonia Gandhi had suggested him to tender his resignation at CWC meeting on May 26. According to sources, the party has convened a meeting of the Congress Working Committee, the highest decision making body of the party at 11 AM tomorrow. Rahul Gandhi is likely to offer his resignation at the meet, party sources said. The top Congress leadership will deliberate on the reasons of the humiliating loss in Lok Sabha elections and assess them. The party suffered a loss for the second time in a row at the hands of the Narendra Modi led BJP. The party bagged only 52 seats in this election. Top party leaders, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, are expected to attend the meeting. There have already been voices within to introspect on why the party failed to reach out to the people.
