Telangana Results: Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM Leads In 6 Seats, Likely To Retain Strongholds

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi's brother, Akbaruddin Owaisi, is leading from his Chandrayangutta segment by 39,195 votes over his nearest rival BJP's K Mahender.

New Delhi: Amid the counting of votes for the 119-member assembly in Telangana, the Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) is leading in six of the nine assembly constituencies it contested in the elections, as per the Election Commission of India.

In Telangana, Congress appears to be winning the assembly elections with a lead in 64 seats, while Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is ahead in 4 seats. Meanwhile, the BJP is leading in 8 seats in the southern state.

AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi's brother, Akbaruddin Owaisi, is leading from his Chandrayangutta segment by 39,195 votes over his nearest rival BJP's K Mahender after the tenth round of counting.

AIMIM's candidates were leading in Bahadurpura, Charminar, Malakpet, Nampally, and Yakutpura seats but were trailing in Karwan, Rajendranagar, and Jubilee Hills.

In the 2018 Assembly polls, AIMIM, a friendly ally of BRS in Telangana, had won seven seats. Asaduddin Owaisi had appealed to the people to support BRS wherever AIMIM was not in the fray, according to PTI.

Meanwhile, the Congress is likely to form the government for the first time since the formation of Telangana in 2014.

The K Chandrasekhar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) has dominated Telangana politics for a decade and has been at the helm since 2014, when Telangana was granted statehood. In 2018, the BRS had swept the state by winning 88 of 119 seats.

DK Shivakumar On Telangana Poll Results

Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, who is also an observer for the Congress along with other party leaders Ajoy Kumar, K Muraleedharan, Deepa Das Munshi, and KJ George, said that the Telangana results reflected the victory of the people.

"It's not a personal win, it's a victory of the people of Telangana, who have paid their gratitude to Sonia Gandhi for giving them Telangana," he said.

Besides Telangana, the Assembly election results of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh are also being announced.
