Telangana Polls: BRS Leader Says He Was 'Attacked' After Clash Breaks Out With Cong Workers, KTR Reacts
Police said the clash broke out on Saturday night when the Congress workers stopped the convoy of the BRS MLA who was returning after a poll campaign.
New Delhi: BRS leader Guvvala Balaraju was allegedly attacked after a clash broke out between his party and the Congress in Telangana’s Achampet, police said on Sunday, reported news agency PTI. According to Balaraju, who is contesting from Achampet seat in the November 30 state polls, he “sustained injuries” in the clash. He was shifted to a hospital and later discharged.
Police said the clash broke out on Saturday night when the Congress workers stopped the convoy of the BRS MLA who was returning after a poll campaign. The Congress workers alleged Balaraju was carrying money to woo the voters ahead of the elections. Stone pelting was also reported and police swung into action to bring the situation under control, PTI reported.
Some BRS and Congress workers sustained minor injuries and one vehicle in the BRS leader’s convoy as also damaged, police said.
According to the PTI report, the police registered cases in connection with the incident after both BRS and Congress members lodged complaints, a senior official said.
"Further investigations are on. We are verifying into the matter and analysing videos," PTI quoted an official as saying.
Police further said that the BRS, in its complaint, said the Congress workers pelted stones at Balaraju’s convoy, due to which the senior leader was injured. The Congress, on the other hand, said their workers were also attacked by the BRS members.
Meanwhile, Telangana IT minister KT Rama Rao visited Balaraju in the hospital earlier in the day.
“These are truly unfortunate incidents. Violence certainly has no place in democracy. I think it's the frustration which is creeping in from the opposition camp as they have realised that they are losing the elections. The law will take its own course and whoever has done this will have to face the consequences,” PTI quoted KTR as saying.
The elections to the 119-member Telangana Assembly will be held on November 30 and the results will be announced on December 3.
