Punjab Election Result 2022 Highlights: Counting of votes for the much crucial Punjab Assembly elections is scheduled to begin shortly with Election Commission (EC) officials beginning the process by taking into account the postal ballots first. 

The 117-member Punjab assembly went for a single-phase polling on February 20 and recorded a voter turnout of 70.2 per cent. 

According to EC, sixty-three per cent of over 2.14 crore voters in Punjab turned out till 5 pm amid reports of minor skirmishes and snags in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).

Punjab is witnessing a multi-cornered contest with as many as 1,304 candidates, including 93 women and two transgenders in the fray.

As per trends, the main contest in the border state is said to be between the ruling Congress and Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that has managed to garner massive popularity over the period of time. 

Meanwhile, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is contesting Punjab polls in alliance with Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), after breaking two-decade old alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2020 over the three contentious farm laws.

BJP has roped in former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh's Punjab Lok Congress (PLC), besides the Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, comprising a group of farmers that had taken part in the agitation against the Centre's now-repealed agricultural laws.

Punjab Assembly Election 2022 - Exit Poll Results

In a massive setback for the ruling Congress government in Punjab, AAP has gained more than 15 per cent votes over the last elections and is likely to form the government in the state.

According to the ABP News - CVoter Exit Poll, AAP is projected to bag somewhere around 51-61 seats to form the government with a very narrow margin. Meanwhile, the ruling Congress is slated to get around 22-26 seats and Akali Dal is projected to get 20-26 seats.

The BJP-Amarinder Singh alliance is expected to win 7 to 13 seats while others may win 1 to 5 seats.

Punjab Assembly Election - 2017 Results

In the 2017 Assembly elections, the Congress had won an absolute majority in Punjab by winning as many as 77 seats in the 117-member Assembly, ousting the SAD-BJP government after 10 years.

AAP had emerged as the second-largest party, winning 20 seats. While SAD won 15 seats in the border state, BJP could manage to secure only three seats.

AAP's winning candidate Jagdeep Kamboj, after defeating SAD's Sukhbir Singh Badal from Jalalabad seat said that he was expecting to win by 25,000 votes but has won with over 30,000. Thanking the voters for his victory, Kamboj said the main focus will be on education followed by electricity and water.
