Punjab Election: EC Orders FIR Against Kejriwal For Making 'Frivolous Allegations' Against Akalis

Kejriwal has been accused of “violating the Model Code of Conduct” and “making false and frivolous allegations against other parties”.

New Delhi: The Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, has ordered the registration of an FIR against Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal following a complaint by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

Kejriwal has been accused of “violating the Model Code of Conduct” and “making false and frivolous allegations against other parties”.

Shiromani Akali Dal spokesperson Arshdeep Singh Kler has raised objections to the video uploaded on social media platforms, including Facebook and Twitter, ANI reported.

“The case stands reported to the ECI for further necessary action,” the Chief Electoral Officer said in his notice.

The Chief Electoral Officer also said this video clip is not approved by the state-level Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC).

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress candidate Sidhu Moosewala from Mansa seat have also been booked for violating the Model Code of Conduct.

They were found campaigning in Mansa after the 6 p.m. electioneering deadline earlier on Friday, which was the last day for campaigning, said an FIR lodged against them, PTI reported.

The two leaders have been booked under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The case has been registered against them on a complaint by Vijay Singla, who is the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Mansa.

Voting for the Punjab Assembly will be held in a single phase on February 20.

The results will be declared on March 10.

In the 2017 Punjab Assembly polls, the Congress won 77 seats in the 117-member House, whereas the Shiromani Akali Dal could win only 18 seats.

The AAP emerged as the second-largest party with 20 seats.
