Panaji Election Result 2022: Utpal Parrikar, Who Left BJP After Not Getting Ticket From Panaji, Loses By 674 Votes
Panaji Election Result 2022: Utpal Parrikar loses his seat by 800 votes. He had the support of Shiv Sena and NCP.
Panaji Election Result 2022: Utpal Parrikar has lost from the Panaji Assembly seat by around 700 votes. He had contested as an independent candidate from the Panaji seat in the Goa Assembly Election 2022.
BJP's Atanasio Monserrate won from this seat.
Utpal Parrikar is the son of the late Manohar Parrikar, a former defence minister of India and chief minister of Goa.
After the end of last round of counting, Monserratte won by 674 votes, PTI quoted an election official as saying.
“I gave a good fight,” Utpal Parrikar said while leaving the counting station.
While Parrikar bagged 5,857 votes, Monserratte polled 6,531 votes, while Congress candidate Elvis Gomes got 3,062 votes.
Parrikar had decided to contest the election as an independent after the BJP refused ticket to him from the state capital, which was his father's traditional seat.
Quoting Monserratte, the PTI report said the BJP cadres in Panaji did not accept Parrikar in the party.
Utpal Parrikar is a graduate from Michigan State University, USA. He is married to Uma Sardesai and they have a son, Dhruv.
Parrikar had said in the past that he left the BJP with a heavy heart because he was not being listened to. He had also proposed that if the BJP changed its candidate from the Panaji seat, he would leave the field.
Elections to the Goa Assembly were held in a single phase on February 14 this year. In 2017, the Congress had emerged as the single largest party but the BJP formed the government with support from some regional outfits and independents.
