'No Action Against Real Culprits As They Are Linked To BJP': Rahul Gandhi On Morbi Bridge Tragedy

Rahul In Rajkot: While watchmen (placed at the accident scene) were caught and jailed, he stated that no action was taken against the "real culprits" since they were associated with the BJP.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi stated on Monday that no action has been taken against the "real culprits" behind the collapse of a suspension bridge in Gujarat's Morbi town last month, which killed 135 people because they had a "good relationship" with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In his second election rally of the day, he added that while watchmen (placed at the accident scene) were caught and jailed, no action was taken against the real culprits.

Today, the Congress MP addressed two rallies in Gujarat, the first in Surat and the second in Rajkot.

The Congress leader also posted on Twitter, "about 150 people were killed in Morbi, among them 47 were innocent children. It's been 22 days since the tragedy. However, the real responsible for the accident was neither caught nor any action taken against them. Support of the guilty, development of the corrupt - this is BJP's Corruption & Commission model," he tweeted in Hindi.

"When journalists asked me what I think about the Morbi tragedy... I said around 150 people died and this is not a political issue and so I would say nothing about this. But the question arises today as to why no action was taken against those who were behind this (tragedy), why no FIR (has been filed against them)?" he asked, PTI quoted him as saying.

"Will they be spared because they have a good relationship with the BJP? They arrested and jailed chowkidars (watchmen), but no action was taken against the real culprits," the Congress MP alleged.

This coincides with the Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra. The gathering was expected to give the party's supporters a huge boost ahead of the Gujarat Assembly elections next month. Rahul Gandhi stayed aloof from the Himachal Pradesh Assembly election earlier this month.

The Congress MP took a break from the 3,570-kilometer cross-country foot-march, which began on September 7 in Tamil Nadu and is now going through neighbouring Maharashtra, to address two election rallies in support of his party's candidates in Gujarat.
