Nagaland Election Results 2023: As the counting for the election to the 60-member Nagaland Legislative Assembly is underway, the NDPP-BJP alliance appears to be securing a clear majority, while the opposition NPF is ahead only in 4 seats.

As per the Election Commission of India (ECI), apart from the major national and local parties including NDPP, BJP, NPF, Congress and Tipra Motha, regional parties from other states have also contributed to the state's assembly elections.

Impact of other regional parties on Nagaland elections

Four regional parties contested in the elections- Janata Dal (United), which is Bihar's state party, Chirag Paswan - led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), Nationalist Congress Party, the largest opposition party in Maharashtra, and Republican Party of India (Athawale).

According to ECI, Janata Dal (United) and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) claimed 2 seats each, Nationalist Congress Party won 5 seats and the Republican Party of India (Athawale) claimed 1 seat.

Last time, Nagaland had no opposition as all parties with a presence in the 60-member assembly backed the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party-led government. NDPP-BJP alliance has contested the polls with a 40:20 formula (40 seats for the NDPP and 20 for the BJP). The Congress fielded 23 candidates, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) 21, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) 16, Nationalist Congress Party and National People’s Party 12 each and the Republican Party of India (Athawale) fielded eight aspirants.

In the run-up to the Nagaland Assembly Election 2023, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Kazheto Kinimi secured an uncontested win from the Akuluto assembly constituency. His only opponent, Congress candidate Khekashe Sumi, withdrew his candidature giving BJP a seat even before the counting of votes.

Over 13 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise in the northeastern state with an 83 percent turnout recorded, according to V Shashank Shekhar, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). Polling took place at 2,291 stations across 59 of the total 60 constituencies. This year's turnout was 1.99 percent lower than the 2018 poll, which recorded an 85.62 percent voter turnout, Chief Electoral Officer said.

Meanwhile, repolling was conducted in four polling stations in Nagaland on Wednesday. The repolling was held at the New Colony polling station in the Zunheboto constituency, Pangti V in the Sani constituency, Jaboka Village in the Tizit constituency and Pathso East Wing in the Thonoknyu constituency. Election officials in the state did not cite any reasons for the repolling in the four polling stations previously.
