Maharashtra Assembly Election 2024
Voting for the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly will be held today as the ruling BJP-led Mahayuti alliance will battle it out with the opposition's Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) comprising Congress, NCP (SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) to retain power in the state. The counting of votes is scheduled to be held on November 23.
A total of 4,136 candidates are contesting Maharashtra elections. These include 2,086 are Independents and 150 rebel candidates. The total number of candidates this year is up from the previous Assembly polls in 2019 in which 3,239 candidates were in fray.
The BJP is contesting in 149 seats, while CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar-led NCP will contest 81 and 59 seats respectively. In MVA, the Congress has fielded the highest number of candidates from 101 seats, followed by Shiv Sena (UBT) 95, and NCP (SP), which has fielded 86 candidates.
The constituencies witnessing high stakes battle include Worli, Baramati, Vandre East, Nagpur South West, and Kopri-Pachpakhadi. Voting for the 288 seats will begin at 7 AM and end at 6 PM.
Jharkhand Assembly Election 2024
Voting for the remaining 38 constituencies will be held today in the second and final phase in Jharkhand, which will be held alongside Maharashtra polls on November 20. The electoral fate of 528 candidates, including Chief Minister Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren will be decided today.
The polling will start at 7 AM and will continue till 5 PM except for 31 booths, where it will conclude at 4 PM. Results will be announced on November 23.
The ruling JMM-led INDIA bloc and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance are pitted against each other. While the BJP has fielded candidates in 68 seats, JMM has fielded candidates in 43 seats. Congress has fielded 30 candidates and is contesting in alliance with the ruling JMM.
Around 1.23 crore voters including 60.79 lakh women and 147 third gender voters are eligible to vote across 14,218 polling stations. 28 seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates and nine for Scheduled Caste candidates.
Out of the 38 constituencies, 18 are in the Santhal Pargana region comprising six districts including Deoghar, Jamtara, Dumka, Godda, Pakur, and Sahibganj.
