Stone Pelting Incident Reported From West Bengal's Cooch Behar Amid LS Phase 1 Voting

The incident comes hours after two TMC workers were injured in an attack by unidentified assailant in Cooch Behar.

Incident of stone pelting was reported from West Bengal's Cooch Behar as voting is underway for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls is underway. The central forces dispersed the perpetrators and further details are awaited. 

The incident takes place a day after two Trinamool Congress members were seriuosly injured in an attack by unidentified assailants in the constituency on Thursday night, hours before polling. 

North Bengal Development Minister and TMC's Dinhata MLA Udayan Guha accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of orchestrating the attack saying that the duo were waylaid and attacked with sharp weapons while they were on their way to the booth committee president's house in Dinhata, according to a PTI report. 

"The BJP has already started its terror and intimidation tactics in the entire Cooch Behar Lok Sabha seat. They are carrying out murderous attacks on our supporters. People will respond to their terror by rejecting the BJP," Guha said.

The TMC MP said that one of the injured party workers suffered head injuries while the other has serious wounds on hand and leg.

Meanwhile, a local BJP leader denied the party' involvement in the incident calling it a case of TMC's "internal fued", according to the PTI report.

Following the incident, a police officer said a large number of police force has been sent to the area and patrolling has been intensified to prevent any flare-ups between the two parties.

He also said that the injured were TMC workers and police were investigating the matter and the identities of the attackers were yet to be ascertained.
