Ex-Arunachal CM Nabam Tuki Resigns As State Congress Chief Following Defection Of Party MLAs
Former Arunachal Pradesh CM Nabam Tuki resigned as the president of the state Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha and the assembly elections.
Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Former Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki has tendered his resignation as the president of the state Congress ahead of the Lok Sabha and the assembly elections, a party leader said on Saturday, as reported by news agency PTI.
He further stated that Tuki sent his resignation to the All India Congress Committee on Friday, following the defection of three party MLAs to the BJP. APCC general secretary Gyamar Tana said, "The former chief minister resigned on moral grounds as he could not prevent the MLAs from defecting to other political parties," as quoted by PTI.
Tuki represents the Sagalee Assembly constituency in the state. Earlier this month, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Lombo Tayeng, a six-time MLA from Mebo in East Siang district, joined the BJP. Two other Congress MLAs, who joined the saffron party last month, are Ninong Ering and Wanglin Lowangdong.
On Friday, the Congress released its first list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The list included names of some crucial leaders of the party like former party president Rahul Gandhi, former Chattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel.
The grand old party has repeated Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad, from where he registered victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Out of the 39 names on the list, 24 candidates are from SC-ST, OBC, and minority communities. Congress treasurer Ajay Maken said the list has a good mix of youth and experienced leaders, besides those who have been associated with the party from their student and youth days and are connected with the grassroots.
"The Central Election Committee had met yesterday and has selected 39 candidates in the first list, which includes former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel," he said at a press conference, as quoted by news agency PTI.
