Former AAP MLA Asim Ahmed Khan Joins Congress Ahead Of Delhi Polls

Asim Ahmed Khan had won the Matia Mahal seat for AAP in 2015 after which he was appointed as the Food and Civil Supplies Minister by the Kejriwal government at that time.

Former Matia Mahal MLA Asim Ahmed Khan joined the Congress party ahead of the Delhi Assembly Elections, Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said on Monday.

The former AAP leader was inducted into the Congress in the presence of Devender Yadav after a meeting for the upcoming Assembly elections.

Asim had won the Matia Mahal seat for AAP in 2015 after which he was appointed as the Food and Civil Supplies Minister by the Kejriwal government at that time.

However, the former Delhi minister was sacked by former Delhi CM Kejriwal from the Delhi cabinet in 2015 for allegedly taking a bribe of 6 lakh for allowing the construction of a building in his constituency. He also held the Environment and Forest Ministry along with Minority Affairs in the Delhi Government. He was replaced by Ballimaran MLA Imran Hussain in the Delhi cabinet.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Devender Yadav announced the decision of the former AAP MLA joining the party and said that the Asim Ahmed Khan made the decision of joining Congress inspired by the ideology and principles of the party.

"Today, Asim Ji officially joined the Congress party from the Matia Mahal Assembly constituency. Asim Ji made this significant decision inspired by the ideology and principles of the Congress Party. A warm welcome to you in the Congress family! I am confident that your leadership will bring new energy to the party!" Yadav said in a post on X.

In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party leader Shoaib Iqbal won the seat with 67,282 votes. In the 2015 elections, Asim Ahmed Khan had secured victory from AAP with 47,584 votes, defeating Congress's Shoaib Iqbal, who obtained 21,488 votes.

Apart from Asif Ahmad Khan, former AAP MLA Devinder Sehrawat also joined the Congress.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Congress also held a meeting on Monday on manifesto preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections, with Devender Yadav saying the party does not make promises it cannot fulfil.

Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav told a press conference here, the party held interactions with people over what should be included in the manifesto.

"Our belief is that only those promises should be made that can be fulfilled. The Congress does not believe in mere talking," Yadav said.
