Election Results Highlights: BJP's Triple Win Comes As Major Blow To Congress Ahead Of LS Polls

Background

Assembly Polls Election Result 2023 Highlights: It's the final day that will decide the fate of BJP and Congress and the many who took part in the crucial state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana and Chhattisgarh -- also being seen as a litmus test for the parties ahead of the big 2024 Lok Sabha elections next year. The results will also set the tone for the general elections. While the BJP is trying to retain its ground a resurgent and feisty Congress is in an aggressive mode to gain some lost ground ahead of the mega battle in less than six months.

While the BJP is in power in Madhya Pradesh and pulled all stops to retain power in the state, the Congress is trying to buck the 'revolving door' trend in Rajasthan and CM Ashok Gehlot exuded confidence in a Congress victory 'no matter what' exit polls said. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh is being ruled by the Congress and Telangana by K Chandrashekar Rao-led Bharat Rashtra Samith who is eyeing a hat-trick but locked in a triangular contest with the BJP and the Congress.

According to the ABP-CVoter exit poll, Rajasthan is likely to go back to the saffron fold in tradition with its electoral nature of electing alternative governments, while the BJP, which could be facing anti-incumbency for being at the helm of power in the state for nearly two decades, could go to Congress. Telangana might also be clinched by the Congress, dashing KCR's hope for a hat-trick. However, a neck-and-neck fight has been predicted in Chhattisgarh with the Congress having a slight edge.

The counting of votes commenced with postal ballots at 8 am amid tight security for the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly, 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly, 119-member Telangana Assembly and 199-member Rajasthan Assembly. A three-tier security arrangement would be in place to ensure a smooth counting process and only people with valid passes would be permitted to enter the counting centres.

After an impressive victory in Karnataka, the Congress is hoping to clinch Madhya Pradesh and Telangana from the BJP with the hope of retaining power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. A victory ahead of the 2024 elections could also further consolidate the I.N.D.I.A bloc parties to take on the BJP with full force. Meanwhile, the saffron party is seeking to repeat its winning streak in Gujarat, where it has been in power since 1998, in MP and hoping to form governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
